Black fingers. Black smoke. Standing at the stairways to heaven. A wide view on the hundred smoke stacks of the Pott. Under your feet the black overburden. In front of you a sculpture as if created for bouldering. It’s been patiently standing here on the slagheap for 15 years and it’s screaming to be climbed… What place could be more fascinating for an exciting, novel boulder trip than this disdained Pott? Granite, sand stone, concrete, bronze … you’ll get it all under your fingers. Who among you has climbed on bronze before? Can you imagine? You’ll see, this is the perfect place for the second buildering world cup...
Oh how lucky we were! Of the 10 weather forecasts we consulted, only one gave us the prediction we wanted to hear: Good weather for the Buildering WC 2008!
And "our" forecast was the only one that was right, we had excellent conditions. Excellent for climbing that is, as it wasn't as freezing as in Cologne two years ago, but nor really cosy either. Not everyone had the strength to believe in the weather and so a couple of strong contenders were missing. Those guys were missing out on a grand day of climbing in and around Essen.
Below: Udo Neumann and Daniel Pohl location scouting for the buildering WC in the Ruhrpott
At the end everybody involved won. We all had a great day of climbing together, Christian Benk defended his title, the area has some new five star problems now and Daniel Pohl and Udo Neumann, who scoped out the locations, the satisfaction of organizing an a unique "situationist" event in the urban wilderness of the Puhrpott.
